Joan Coines is a Project Manager in the Enzyme Engineering division at Nostrum Biodiscovery (NBD). He graduated in Biochemistry at University of Barcelona (UB) in 2014, obtained his MSc in Bioengineering at Chemical Institute of Sarrià (IQS) in 2016 and his PhD at UB in 2021. During this time, he acquired great experience in investigating enzymes by means of computational and theoretical chemistry methods.
His research has been focused on the elucidation of reaction mechanisms in glycosidase catalysis through a multi-scale approach which involves techniques such as molecular dynamics and hybrid methods (QM/MM), combined with metadynamics. Among his studies, the novel engineering of a hydrolytic glycosidase into a phosphorylase and the selectivity tuning of a glycosyl transferase, stand out. Additionally, he worked at the University of Cagliari analyzing the molecular transport across bacterial porins. He has published several scientific articles in peer-review journals such as Journal of the American Chemical Society, ACS Catalysis, Angewandte Chemie and Nature Communications.
